Battle in Ballymoe…
On Saturday afternoon last, the boys U14 team battled hard but lost out to St John’s of Sligo, after extra time, in the SFAI Trophy. After going close early on, Sam Walsh saw off numerous opponents to smash home a deserved opener. Conor Keaveney and Andrej Anic came close to doubling the lead. Town restricted our visitors to long range efforts. Ten minutes before the break, St John’s got a fortunate equaliser as a Town pass rebounded off their striker. Aided by a strong breeze in the second half, Aaron Miley and Walsh threatened the Sligo goal while Town’s back four kept the opposition at bay. It was an enjoyable and an even contest and extra time would be required. In the first half of extra time, Sligo hit two quick fire goals. Still, Town battled back. After good work from Anic, Lucas Silva was on hand to get the ball over the line with five minutes remaining to set up an exciting finish. Despite their best efforts, Town couldn’t bring it to penalties. Hopefully, the lads learnt a little more as they look forward to football in 2023.
Thanks to those who came to support this young team on the day. Helen Kerr provided both teams with nice treats post match which were greatly appreciated.
Finally and importantly, thanks also to Ballymoe FC for hosting the game. It’s a fine facility and the pitch was favourably firm despite the inclement weather.
FOOT in the Game…
A lot goes on in a game of soccer. Whether you are a player or a coach, it’s important to keep it simple. For each game, have one aim as a coach and one action as a player.
Think FOOT – Focus On One Thing.
